Makerspace Workshop Prep Day 2: Beer brewing

Page history last edited by Lynette 9 years, 7 months ago Saved with comment

(The mead racking notes were integrated into the table on the Prep Day 1 page.)

For prep day 2, I wanted to see how long it would take to get the beer batch done from start to finish in a fully stocked kitchen, under the assumption that it'll take longer than that in a not fully stocked location where we'll be bringing in all the kitchen gear (from the packing list).

I got out the equipment at 2:15 and put the lid on the pail at 6:45, followed by cleanup, so it took about 4.5 hours without setup and teardown time, with a person dedicated to doing just this. With mead to also be brewed and both mead and beer to be bottled, we're going to have our hands full! :D

The rough process notes:

2:15: Started setup and sterilization

2:35: 3 gallons of water into a pot on the stove on high.

3:20: Water got to 150 for wort making (about 45 minutes).

Reduced heat to medium to keep it from going past 175 per instructions.

3:40: Wort had cooked for 20 minutes. Took out grain sack, cranked heat to high to get to a boil for adding malt.

4:00: Water wasn't vigorously boiling, but it was rippling some. Added dry and wet malt, waited for a boil again.

4:50: Again back to shimmery boil (should probably have waited til 5, but didn't know at this point whether the burner was capable of getting that volume to boiling.)

Added Northern Brewer hops for the 40 minute boil. (It started a rolling boil about 5.)

5:30: Added the Willamette hops for the 5 minute boil. Started an ice bath.

5:35: Turned off the heat, transferred vat into sink.

Added cupfuls of ice to sink, swirled around until melted, ladled out hot water, repeated - about 20 cups of ice over the next hour.

6:35: Wort finally under 100 degrees, therefore cool enough for racking into 5 gallon pail for dilution with cold water.

6:45: Done racking and adding water and hydrometer testing; put the lid on the pail and started cleanup.

August 10 OG: 1.038

(Originally it was 1.040, but the instructions said to get the OG between 1.034 and 1.038, so I added more water to drop it further.)

September 27 FG:

ABV calculator:

(OG - FG) X 131.25 = ABV

(1.038 - _____) x 131.25 = _____
