About the Festival

So…why hold a festival called Joseph of Arimathea?

Joseph of Arimathea was venerated during the Middle Ages, especially in Britain — where (according the British scholars of the Middle Ages) he supposedly had his followers send the Holy Grail. Over time he was celebrated with his own feast-day across Europe. Different European cultures chose differing times of year to hold this celebration, but we are holding ours at the end of August because it’s just a really convenient time for us to get our event site and welcome newcomers to our local group.

Also, far be it from us to deny anyone in the Society for Creative Anachronism the opportunity to go to an event where they can quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail all day long, if they want. Of course, we’re all about the history and scholasticism of the holiday here.

Whether you are new to the SCA or a seasoned card-carrying member, we are hoping that you will enjoy this festival as a day of fun, food, and history as we recreate the culture of the Middle Ages — at least, the good parts. If you want to recreate something like beheadings, you’ll have to go to the Castle of AAAAaaaaauuuuuggghhh

 

 

 

 

 

 

Accommodations for the Traveler

The journey is long and the King’s highway dusty. Pilgrims to the festival may need to stay the night.

The Illini Union – The day site
The Illini Union, 217-333-3030, 1401 W Green St, Urbana IL has 40 rooms blocked for the `SCA @ UIUC’ for Friday and Saturday evenings, August 27 and 28. The smaller rooms will cost $99/night for one person with an additional $7/night for each additional person. These rooms will no longer be saved for the event after July 28. People reserving rooms after July 28, if they are available, will be charged about $10/night more each night. People staying at the hotel will get very good parking spaces.

We hope those who attend will partake of our feast the day of the event. For those other meals here are a few other establishments.

The second half of the class we will “go on safari”, looking for examples of the different ranks we have discussed. 406 $2.00         11:00 – 12:00 Free Period 407 –         12:00 – 1:00 Intro to the Arts & Sciences in the SCA — Lord Orry de Guerrin An overview of arts and sciences represented in the SCA, learning a craft, and how to enter a project into an SCA A&S competition. 405 –         12:00 – 1:00 Webministering 101 — Lord  Kenneth mac Donald Webministering for the first time webminister. How to do it with no experience, training, or skills. (Bring laptop if you have one) 406 –         12:00 – 1:00 Introduction to Spinning — Elizabeth of Wurm Wald This class is exactly what it sounds like. Learn how to spin; no hula hoops required. Drop spindles and wheels will abound. Spin with wool. Fee applies for wool to spin with. 407 $2.00         12:00 – 1:00 A Recipe for 10th-Century Saxon Sausage — Lord Aleator This hands-on class will go step-by-step through the whole sausage-making process. Meet at the Asian-American Cultural Center (AACC) building, 5 minutes away from the Illini Union. Maps will be available at Troll. AACC –         1:00 – 2:00 Middle English for reading & recitation — Lady Sofya Chyudskaya Smolyanina This class will cover two dialects of Middle English, the London dialect (as heard in The Canterbury Tales)and the Northwest Midlands dialect (Sir Gawain & the Green Knight). 405 –         1:00 – 2:00 Working Kumihimo on a Disk –Lady Jonet of Keyth Learn the very easy art of Japanese cord braiding, known as kumihimo, whose modern uses include lacings, cords, site tokens, and, at higher levels, belts and trim. We will learn how to set up the disk for 8 strand and (time allowed) 16 strand cords. There will be examples of patterns available. When the class is complete, the student should have a keychain-length of cord completed. $3 for a disk, cord, and handouts (limited to 15, but anyone is welcome to observe). 406 $3.00         1:00 – 4:00 Dancing — Mistress Alphia A variety of period dances may be taught over the course of the afternoon. Drop in for a few lessons or stay for three hours! 407 –         2:00 – 3:00               2:00 – 3:00 How to Prepare an SCA Camp Kitchen — Lady Katrina This class is for people who are inexperienced campers or cooks. Site Information

Click the link below for a local map and parking guidelines. When you arrive at the Illini Union, you can pull into the circle drive to unload gear before moving your vehicle to all-day parking. We will have someone on hand to assist and watch your items until you return.

If you have been to Festival of Maidens in the past two years, you are already familiar with the day site. The feast site will be located a couple blocks away.Google Map of the feast site

Please note that the 10th-Century Sausage class and Feast prep will be in a different building on campus, the Asian-American Cultural Center (AACC). This is about a 5-minute walk from the Illini Union. The small parking lot next to the AACC is accessible via the alley off of Oregon St. and is free all day Saturday.

The Feast of Arimathea

Feast Fee: $11

The feast is expected to start at 6pm and dancing at 8:30pm. Feast entertainment will feature performances by the Wurm Wald Music Guild.

This feast will be a sumptuous early period repast. A dazzling feat of gastronomic arts of such refinement that those of more common tastes should use caution when sitting down to partake of this feast. It is as follows:
