Fermenter
|
Description: Glass Carboy or Food-Grade Plastic Bucket

Average cost: 1-gallon glass carboy $4, 5-gallon glass carboy $25; 5-gallon plastic bucket $15 |
Uses: Fermenter for mead, wine & beer.

Airlock & Stopper |
Description: Ballon; S-curve airlock or cup airlock plus rubber cork for bottle
|
Average cost: Balloon - $2 bag of 12; Cup airlock - $2; S-curve airlock - $5; Rubber cork - $0.50 |
Uses: Prevents impurities, wild yeast, and air from getting into the brew, but allows CO2 to escape. Cup airlocks are easier to clean than s-curves.

Large Pot |
Description: Large, stainless steel or enamel cooking pot
|
Average Cost: 20 QT. Stainless Steel Pot - $35 - $50; 20 Qt. Enamel Pot - $120 - $150 |
Uses: Brew mead, wine or beer must prior to pitching yeast. Must be stainless steel or enamel, as any other type of pot will affect the flavors of the brew.

Racking Cane
|
Description: Long, hard plastic tube |
Average Cost: $5 |
Uses: For transferring brew from one container to another. The racking cane prevents sediment and solid ingredients from transferring along with the brew.

Plastic Tubing and Tube Clamp |
Description: 6 ft. flexible tubing and clamp to fit on tubing
|
Average Cost: Flexible tubing - $1.50 for a 5 foot length at Friar Tuck's; Clamp - $ 0.50 |
Uses: For transferring brew from container to container. Especially useful in bottling with the racking cane and tube clamp. |

Description: Bottles and caps or corks

Average Cost: Wine bottles - $1 each; 12 16 oz. brown bottles with EZ Cap attachment - $25; Non-screw top bottles (cleaned thoroughly) - free from bars, parties, or personal stash or 24 from store - $12; 144 caps - $3.50; 30 Corks - $5 |
Uses: Bottle brews in preparation for drinking.

Bottle Brush |
Description: Long wire with bristles on the end

Average Cost: 23-inch brush - $5 |
Uses: Necessary to clean carboys and bottles prior to sanitization.

Hydrometer |
Description: Long, thin glass tube
|
Average Cost: $5 |
Uses: Useful in determining the alcohol content in your brews.

Thermometer |
Description: Long, thin, glass tube
|
Average Cost: $5 |
Uses: Necessary to find the correct temperature of brew prior to pitching yeast. If too hot, the must will kill the yeast. If too cold, the yeast will go dormant.

Sanitizer (or bleach)
|
Description: Sanitizer: Food-safe chemical, usually in powder or pill form. Bleach: Add 1 Tbsp per gallon, then rinse the equipment.

Average Cost: 8 oz. Powder - $4; 50 tablets - $2 |
Uses: Sanitizing all equipment is essential to prevent infestion by impurities and wild yeast.
